Identification of Clothing Fabric Performance

Correctly analyzing and identifying fabric properties and applying them accurately and reasonably to garment design is fundamental knowledge that every designer must master. Otherwise, misidentification of fabrics could lead to problems in the entire garment’s design, production, wear, or even washing. Fabric identification involves recognizing the raw materials, identifying visual characteristics, and assessing appearance quality. Observing and identifying fabrics should not be limited to visual inspection alone; it should also incorporate auditory, tactile, and even olfactory senses. For example, by visually examining a fabric’s luster, dyeing, surface thickness, weave, texture, and fiber appearance, we can discern its characteristics: cotton fabrics typically have a moderate luster, an overall lack of finesse, a rough feel, and may even contain visible cotton impurities. In contrast, wool-polyester blends exhibit a brighter luster with a shimmering, colorful effect; their structure feels slightly stiff and loses softness when the body moves, and this stiffness becomes more pronounced as the polyester content increases. Such fabrics tend to lack softness and feel crisp, flat, and smooth. By using our hands to touch the fabric, we can perceive its texture—whether it’s soft or hard, smooth or rough, fine or coarse, elastic or rigid—and even gauge the strength and elongation of the fibers.

A simple method for identifying the composition of clothing fabrics is the burning test. The procedure involves pulling a strand of fabric—containing both warp and weft threads—from the seam allowance of the garment, igniting it with fire, observing the characteristics of the burning flame, smelling the odor emitted by the burning fabric, and examining the residue left behind after combustion. By comparing these observations with the fabric composition indicated on the garment’s label, you can determine whether the fabric composition stated on the label matches the actual composition of the fabric, thereby verifying its authenticity.
Local sales of woolen fabrics have increased.
2021-03-24
Recently, the traditional market at China Light & Textile City has seen a localized increase in sales of woolen fabrics, with creative autumn/winter fabrics continuously highlighting their appeal. The range of coarse-spun fashion woolen fabrics available for sample display has expanded locally, and there’s increased interaction between medium-thin and medium-thick fabrics. Local spot supplies have risen slightly, and although individual spot transactions remain relatively small, they collectively show significant volume. Orders for certain targeted fabric varieties have also seen a localized uptick, and the number of fabrics sold over recent days has been growing. Sales of creative autumn/winter fabrics have increased locally, while prices have remained largely stable. In recent times, local marketing of coarse-spun woolen fabrics has shown a mix of subdued demand and occasional bursts of activity. Wool-polyester and wool-viscose fabrics have experienced localized increases in sales, with autumn/winter high-quality wool blends containing 10% to 20% wool showing strong performance—both thinner and thicker variants are in demand. Camel-colored fabrics are particularly popular locally.

In the first quarter of this year, as the COVID-19 pandemic spread both domestically and internationally, home textile enterprises encountered unprecedented difficulties in production and operations. Both domestic and overseas sales orders declined significantly, severely impacting the industry’s operations and profitability. Since late February, as the domestic epidemic has been gradually brought under effective control, domestic-oriented home textile enterprises have resumed production and operations in a step-by-step and orderly manner. However, given the ongoing spread of the pandemic abroad, export-oriented home textile enterprises are facing even more severe challenges. Statistical data show that major operating indicators for the home textile industry all posted negative growth in the first quarter, putting significant pressure on enterprise operations.

During the first week of July 2016 (July 4–10), the overall market conditions in Shaoxing’s traditional China Light and Textile City saw a decline in both customer traffic and sales volume. Weekly marketing activities continued to weaken compared to the previous week, with sales declines becoming increasingly pronounced. Over the past week, as the conventional off-season for the light and textile industry set in, most segments of Shaoxing’s traditional light and textile market began to show successive downward trends. Throughout the week, demand for urgently needed and time-sensitive products gradually waned; coupled with the ongoing reduction in inventory of semi-thin fabrics that had been introduced six months earlier and a further decrease in new order placements, many established, professional traders who previously opened early and closed late started opening later and closing earlier instead. By mid-week, marketing activities for the first-half-year product categories had largely become subdued. Due to the off-season, even products that had just entered the trial-sales phase...
